CARERS WEEK 2023: RECOGNISING AND SUPPORTING CARERS IN THE BRIDLINGTON COMMUNITY

To celebrate Carers Week, 5-11 June, carers in the East Riding are invited to come along to a Leisurely Afternoon Tea Party at an event taking place at Bridlington leisure centre.

Whilst enjoying refreshments and cake, the event is an opportunity to talk to other carers, find out about support available, and to take part in low level physical activities and games hosted by Active Communities.

Carers Week is a UK wide annual awareness campaign for carers and seeks to raise awareness of the impact of the caring role, with this year’s theme being ‘Recognising and supporting carers in the community’.

It is estimated that there are over 46,000 unpaid carers in the East Riding. Only 3500 carers are registered with the Carers Support Service. A range of support is available to people caring for loved ones including short breaks, carer relief, Lifeline, corporate cleaning services and gym memberships and help from carer support workers.

One resident who cares for her husband and is receiving support from the Carers Support Service said: “Because of the Sitting Service I am now able to visit family, which I would normally not be able to do. The person who comes is very friendly and lovely, and my husband looks forward to the sits.”

Councillor David Tucker, portfolio holder for adults, health and care said: “Carers do an amazing job, but we want to ensure that those who care for family members and loved ones access support that can help them in their caring role. We know there are lots of carers who aren’t receiving support, so this week is an opportunity to highlight the types of help available.

“We are currently piloting a Carers Befriending Service, which we hope will roll out to more carers over the course of the year, as well as an online training package. The council continues to work with carers to understand their needs and where we can help them, to ensure a good quality of life for those supporting others.”

Carers can attend the event on 7th June – 1-3pm – at Bridlington leisure centre

Carers are asked to book a place by email: ercarers@eastriding.gov.uk or telephone: 01482 396500 or 0800 918 6844.
