Responding to the latest Government announcement on COVID-19 rules Assistant Chief Constable Chris Noble said:
“We have all heard this week about how the numbers of people with COVID-19 are increasing again at a very quick rate – doubling each week.
“I want to take this opportunity to ask everyone to remember that this virus has not gone away and that we are facing a very serious few months ahead as we come into the winter period.
“I know many people have enjoyed being able to return to some levels of normality in their lives over the past few weeks– some have been able to go back into the workplace, others have enjoyed being able to enjoy leisure activities such as shopping and eating out.
“But it is clearly still extremely important that everyone continues to play their part in keeping themselves and their loved ones safe and we cannot allow those who do not follow the rules to undo the hard won progress we have made.
“We have heard that people feel confused and we understand that but we ask that you do not use this as an excuse to put yourself and others at risk.
“We have always said that the majority of people in Humberside have done the right thing, followed the rules and thankfully we have had relatively low numbers of infections in our area. But we mustn’t be complacent. We have seen how, in other parts of the country, the infection rates have risen very quickly and we must make sure that this does not happen here in Humberside.
“We will do all that we can to ensure people continue to adhere to the restrictions but we cannot do it alone. It’s vitally important that people take the time to understand the restrictions and take personal responsibility for stopping the spread of the virus.
“From today (Thursday 24 September 2020) hospitality, leisure, entertainment and tourism businesses will have to close by 10pm. This includes takeaways, which will have to close by 10pm to the public but will be able to deliver between the hours of 10pm and 5am.
Our officers will work with colleagues in the local authority licencing teams to support local businesses and help them to make sure they are complying with the rules.
“I would also encourage everyone aged 16 and over to download the track and trace app which will be absolutely vital in slowing the spread of the virus. This can be accessed from Android’s Google Play and Apple’s App store.
“Our approach will continue to be one of engaging with people, explaining the guidance and encouraging people to do the right thing. However, we will use enforcement where we have to in order to keep people safe. In many cases, fines for first offence are now £200.”
